If you have paid attention at all to what Bo and I have said of late, then you know full well that we were both excited to see the latest installment of the Final Destination series, aptly named The Final Destination. C'mon it's in 3D!  The new  3D! I won that toss up if you recall or so it seemed at the time.  Well, I gotta tell ya, I hope Bo's movie going experience was better than mine.  I guess that'll teach me to be so smug.  But I digress.  Let's get going.

The beginning of the film starts out promising as they always do.  Our doomed group is at the local speedway enjoying a race when things start to look ominous.  We have the usual vision of what was supposed to happen according to Death's plan and the group manages to avoid their fate for the moment.  I enjoyed the beginning immensely.  The 3D technology is just as impressive as I expected it to be.  Unfortunately the remainder of the film does not follow suit.

Watching Final Destination films will not change your life.  There are no deep plots or intellectual revelations to be found inside, just good gory fun.  We know this. We expect this.  But does that mean they should dispense with a story ALTOGETHER?  I submit the answer to that is a resounding NO!  Apparently the makers of this latest gorefest didn't hear me, though.  Because that is exactly what they did.  The Final Destination has about as much plot as a game of Whack-A-Mole.     They set them up and knock them down.  And this time there is the added annoyance of additional visions to go ahead and give away anything that might have surprised you. I'm thinking they attempted to pad the anorexic script...poorly.  And it still comes in at 75 minutes.  What a rip!

If you are now at the point where you are screaming at me to tell you if the kills are at least cool, I'm coming to that so  settle down.  Some of them are but most of them are anti-climactic.  Those familiar with these movies know that the fun part of them is watching Death set up its victims with a series of unlikely incidents and fake outs.  Those are still included but most of the time I just didn't care.  And by the time we reached the pay off, and I use that term as loosely as Jared's fat pants fit, I was over it.

I would love to expound on the acting and the cast but we didn't get to spend nearly enough time with them to get an idea.  We know nothing about the people, save Mykelti Williamson and all we really know about him is that he's am alcoholic security guard who is responsible for the death of his family.  Who needs anything beyond that? I DO!  Well here's a little more.  Two of the people make up a couple.  They live together.  That's all we get.  Are they students?  Perhaps because a study break is mentioned.  Do they work?  How old are they?  I have no freaking idea because writers Eric Bress and Jeffrey Riddick didn't take the time to tell us.  They didn't take the time to tell us anything and I'm guessing director David R. Ellis (Snakes on a Plane, Final Destination 2, Celluar)didn't see anything wrong with that.

Krista Allen makes an appearance and Justin Welborn of The Signal and the upcoming The Crazies remake is a convincing bigot.  But don't look for more because it's just not there.  It looks like they blew their wad on the 3D effects and I think some of it got me in the eye.
