How Horror Web Sites Have Failed Us;
Or, How I Ensured This Site Will Be
Crushed By Our Corporate Overlords

Our friend Corey recently asked me which websites I would recommend to a horror fan looking for a good time on the web in search of some groovy articles and decent commentary. Aside from my mom-and-pop nonsense here, it was very difficult for me to point to a single site with any confidence. And that left me wondering... why hasn't a horror site come along and given the fans what they want?

Perhaps they have, and I'm speaking to a disenfranchised set of fans who have felt their genre consumed by a young fan base that have given up critical thinking for iPhones. For anyone who claims that the remake of The Fog was a good horror film, this is not the article for you and may God have mercy on your soul. What I'm getting at is that there doesn't seem to be a single place to get well-considered opinion of horror news and events, a site with informed news and opinion, professional takes on every major convention and genre-significant film. But, to be fair, let's look at a few to see how they stack up.

www.fangoria.com

The flagship of the adolescent horror world, this is the best of the crop of websites, too. They don't parade forum posts too prominently on their site, but dig a little deeper and you'll find a lot of people yapping on the boards. This suffers from the same ailment all forums do: stupid people. Not Fango's fault. I might take issue with their moderators, but otherwise this site has some good news articles, reviews that are definitely professional (even if they aren't always right), and some fine interviews. This is my first stop on the web when hunting for horror. The downside? A little too friendly to the indies that are just godawful. Maybe that's the market, but I've been misled by Fango before on movies they've championed in their pages (yes, I have a subscription) only to find that the film should have never been shot, much less viewed.

If Rupert Murdoch owned a horror site, this would be it. It's pretty, the forums are hopping and they do get some great scoops, but there is a level of pandering to seemingly anyone who agrees to an interview or set visit, that it's hard to take any of the reporting seriously. And please, for the love of all that is not irritating, enough with the front page ads that I have to kill just to see if they've added more pics from the set of the Friday the 13th remake. So much potential, but this site makes me feel more angry than informed.

How could you screw this up? You have the name for a horror site and it gets updated about as much as mine does. Plain wrapper, slim news, but it does look like the forum community is active. Not an awful site by any stretch, but feels unambitious and lacks some personality. Too bad.

www.horrormovies.ca

This is the site I hung my hat on when I first started to reach out to others in the horror community. There is a lot of fresh content here, but often the reviews are left to regular joes and jills, with mixed results. The forum is lively, but it, too, suffers from the same knucklehead posts that so many fall prey to. Also, there's a tendency to go with the disruptive ads, much like Bloody Disgusting. Stop that, already. Also, much of the news comes from Fango and B-D, with few scoops of their own. Another site on the bubble that hasn't become a complete package, yet.

Petty, amateurish, the deranged ravings of a semi-lucid half-wit. Thanks for coming by. Sincerely. More real news tomorrow.
